This from Haberdashers Run Amok.

Here's a nice insight into the gentler parts of null sec. I'd love to see an analysis of success or failure at null sec warfare based on whether the alliance caters to their carebears or treats them like bastard step-children. Since I know squat about it, I'll have to leave the work up to someone more knowledgeable. Thanks for the prelude Corelin! *hint, hint*

I prefer hard work - it's more satisfying over the long haul.

For my current endeavors, the latest price index update is mostly welcomed news. Here it is in graph form.


Where does MABMM fall on this chart. Let's just say I'm a secondary producer. I used to be a primary producer. Space Ghost came off one of my lines. However, the margins kept evaporating until I could make more from my datacores than I could from invention.

However, that trend is reversing somewhat, not that my margin on a given Helios have improved all that much. They haven't. The issue is plunging datacore prices. It's still easy money but the market is saturated. My last batch of cores took weeks to clear and the competition was ferocious. I had to drop my prices on a daily basis or be undercut and sell nothing.

It got me wondering if I shouldn't just reinvest them into invention again. Yes, it sucks trying to get time in the lab. A Helios invention job takes 25 hours but my queue times are typically over a week. Even this carebear doesn't like waiting that long. No, the margins aren't great but they are steady and on some items the margin is good. You have to be careful what you choose to research.

So the business environment keeps changing in New Eden and MABMM will change with it. That's really what it means to be an entrepreneur. Some will say you should anticipate new markets so you can make a killing. Yes, that works - sometimes. But it is speculation, not entrepreneurship. It's the difference between a get rich quick scheme and hard work. I prefer hard work - it's more satisfying over the long haul.

I left the station this evening on my PI run only to have my ears assaulted by banal dick swinging the like of which I've never encountered in Aporulie. It is typically very quite - just the way an industrialist likes it. Tonight it was obvious that something different was afoot.

It takes no Sherlock Holmes at this point to realize that someone is trying to lure STORM alliance capsuleers to the Yona gate. Soon I knew why.

I finished out my PI run, jumped into my Helios Space Ghost, and warped over to have a look. Testecles orbited the gate close in with a Domi launching taunts. Space Ghost's AI returned an alliance tab on the Domi of 31st Reliables Division (31RD.) There was no one else around. It had to be a trap. As I orbited under cloak 100km off the gate, STORM arrived. It was a big mistake.


At some point, someone really has to do something about grey logistics in hi-sec. STORM never had a chance. Three Basilisks warped in to rep the 31RD though I'm not sure they needed them with a Domi, Rohk, Proteus and several other lesser ships on hand. They more than met the 3rd Principle of War in Field Manual 3-0.
Mass: Mass the effects of overwhelming combat power at the decisive place and time. Synchronizing all the elements of combat power where they will have decisive effect on an enemy force in a short period of time is to achieve mass. Massing effects, rather than concentrating forces, can enable numerically inferior forces to achieve decisive results, while limiting exposure to enemy fire.
Well done 31RD. I hope you learned a good lesson STORM.

Some days you just have to kill something. Not someone, but some thing must die - like rogue drones. They are worthless scraps of malfunctioning circuitry full of nasty. Nothing feels quite as nice in taking these abominations out as blasters at close range. They're loud; they're noisy and they make a satisfying explosion in short order!

"Cover Charge" in Dust 514 = NeX seeding.

I've been playing around with Google Plus and have an Eve Online "spark." It delivers some interesting articles like this one from eurogamer.net. This one pertains to Dust 514 but grabbed my attention as it spoke of Dust's cost structure and game credits. Here is the link so you can read it yourself:

You pay this "cover charge" up front and what do you get? You get in game credits. Does anyone out there want to bet against me that the "credits" Dust players get issued will be Aurum? If you bet me 1,000,000 ISK that they won't be Aurum, I'll pay 10 to 1 odds if I'm wrong. Any takers?

Here is another portion of the article that caught my attention. This quote is attributed directly to Hilmar of email flame fame.It seems to speak to CCP's twist on the free to play concept.
"We might go fully free-to-play down the line, but in the beginning we have a cover charge just to manage the initial launch of it."
Can this statement explain the attitude behind the NeX's initial pricing? Is CCP trying to "manage the initial launch" by some obscure principle of piss-the-player-base-off? How many $70 monocles does it take to manage a launch? Evidently not the number he mentioned.

Later, CCP's CTO Halldor Fannar goes on to explain that the reason CCP went with PS2 rather than Xbox is that Sony allowed them to use their own systems. These wouldn't happen to be the systems in a London data center would they? The ones that newly have 3d avatars and the NeX?

I remember back through the entire recent debacle how CCP seemed to maintain two conflicting stances on NeX. They were:

  • NeX would have no items that would affect Eve game play.
  • CCP would not rule out that non-vanity items would be for sell in NeX.
In CCP Zulu's own words,
"The investment of money should not give you an unfair advantage over the investment of time. Saying never, that puts me in an awkward position. EVE has been running for eight years now, hoping, we do our jobs right it’s going to be running for 80 more. I don’t want to put the person doing my job 80 years from now into a position where I’ve promised something. I don’t see it as part of the core philosophy of being able to buy an unfair advantage with money, that’s not something I see work for EVE."

He could have just as easily meant whoever would be his counterpart in Dust 514. Also, if you take his very first sentence and parse it in Dust 514 terms, it doesn't compute. Dust 514 is a first person shooter. The time investment is non-existent compared to the Eve training model. There is no "investment of time" to gain an unequal advantage over. This tells me clearly that CCP will have game affecting items for sell in the Dust 514 section of NeX. I've got another 10 to 1 odds bet for that one too, if anyone has a spare million ISK to put on the line. I'll even cover all bets, how's that?

What does this do for CCP's credibility and their promise to not affect Eve game play through the NeX? Nothing. I see no problem in them handling Dust 514 players differently than Eve players. They are two completely different gaming models. Logic dictates that CCP must handle them differently. An Eve player might be able to see the mega laser cannon a Dust 514 mercenary could buy but s/he could no more use it than the merc could fly a Raven. In terms of mathematics, the sets have no join.

I'm okay with it.

Unless Aurum can be transferred from an Eve alliance to a Dust 514 alliance allowing them to buy their mega laser cannons and thus allow the eve alliance to more easily gain planets. That would affect Eve game play so...

Don't let Rixx kill you!

"If you happen to be a carebear person, just leave the d-scan alone, it won't help you. In fact I don't think it even works, so pay no attention to it."
Listen very carefully my carebear friends. Rixx is trying to KILL you. Don't listen to him! He doesn't want you to use your D-scan. He wants to sneak up on you nice an easy while you peacefully drill 'roids in situational ignonorance.

Here is the proper carebear ending to his Idiot's Guide.
Use your D-scan constantly. Set it to 360, lower the range to 3,000,000 Km (your optimal distance will vary depending on the amount of time it takes you to get to warp) and spam that button. As Rixx's ship warps in to kill you, it will have to slow down. That makes the last 3,000,000 Km of his trip last forever. Remember, in Eve forever is the amount of time it takes to warp your mining barge out of harm's way. Make sure you are aligned with a safe place (and not another belt or planet and for gods' sake not the sun!) Always do this. Do not forget or Rixx will kill you. The moment you see Rixx's, or any ship, on your D-scan hit warp. Don't wait. If you are concerned with being jumped by Rixx, you are already in a dangerous place. Hesitation will let Rixx get a point on you and then you are dead. Don't let him have it. Hit your warp button the moment anything shows up on your D-scan. It is more profitable to leave with a half load and live to mine another day than to be a frozen corpse floating outside Rixx's cockpit window.
The corollary to this amendment is how far out you should set your D-scan. If you leave it at max you will pick up a lot of passing traffic. That will cause you to be extremely jumpy, to say the least, and is unnecessary. Here is a very interesting forum thread concerning warp speeds that bears on how far to set your D-scan. Alair (comment #11) had this to say:
"Many warps are short enough (say ~20 AU) that the warp acceleration curve is the dominant factor. This is why your ships max warp speed often just doesn't mean much. You spend 90% of your time climbing exactly the same curve as everyone else, regardless of your maximum warp speed.
Did some testing; 11.5AU warp takes between about 31.0s and 34.0s from the moment you click "warp to" with your aligned ship until the speedo "warping" message is replaced by some m/s figure. This was the same in a 3.0AU/s BS, a 9.0AU/s Inty and a 13.5AU/s covops. System had ~100 players and node lag caused a measurement error of +-1.5s. Whatever speed advantage the 13.5AU/s ship has is lost in the noise on a 12AU or less warp."
This is fairly accurate based on my experience. Since Rixx is limited to a 14 AU scan range it does not matter how fast his ship's warp is. He is curve bound. You can safely count on it taking at least 30 seconds for him to get to you. If your warp time is 8 seconds then you only need enough time to hit the button and warp - say 10 seconds if you are really slow. Set your D-scan to 1/3 its max range or about 4.5 million Km. If your warp time is less, set it lower and cut down on the number of false alarms.

Hi-Sec market hubs in null sec.

Here is an interesting idea that came out of the CCP/CSM minutes from thier May meeting.

"Dr. Eyjo pointed out that presently the EVE economy is designed intentionally to keep nullsec and hisec interdependent in terms of their markets. The CSM reiterated that they wanted markets to be spread out more, rather than everything being exported from Jita into Nullsec. Dr. Eyjo suggested a concept of hisec ‘market islands’ in 0.0, such as a teleport or Interbus link to Jita – where the aim would be to temporarily ‘plant seeds’ of markets in nullsec. The CSM was curious about this idea, but had no unified opinion"

I like the idea of hisec islands in nullsec on several levels.

For nullsec residents it gives them a way out of bottlenecks and the Jita Jam.

For us real carebears, it gives us access to potentially very lucrative markets with little risk. It also takes us out of bottlenecks and certain hisec risks that are known to exist.

For those with other goals in mind, it gives them a little something to look forward to as well. I think this sums it up nicely:

Will NeX make me futterwack?

Here is the NeX blog post concerning price tiers.

Now is this so bad? Seems to be a little something for everyone. Then I got to the end.

"Remember, these items can and will be available for ISK as long as someone puts them up for sale there. As with the rest of EVE the market is based on supply and demand and selling clothes may become a lucrative way of making some additional ISK."

Say again - over. I can resell clothing items? Will there be hats? Oh please, please, please tell me I can sell hats for ISK! That would just make me dance.
